LO4 - Editing

These are some stills of the editing process. The main block of audio is the music. I had to work around the music to make the film flow. The other pieces of audio that are underneath the music are not the original audio for each clip - I found a website that uploaded royalty-free sound effects and I found some that would work in the film as the audio quality for most of my footage wasn't of a great quality. You can see some of these audio clips in the third still.

In the first and second stills you can see footage being edited in the Effect Controls window. I used Effect Controls for both the video and audio: fading an audio segment to and from silence in just the right places, as well as adjusting the scale of a few clips to change them in post-production from an EWS to a wide shot, or even a medium shot to emphasize the subject.

LO3 - Filming

I actually forgot to take specific photographs of the setup, but I was lucky enough to get some of it from these two. I positioned the tripod in the footwell of the passenger seat in the camper van, and some of the footage I have used is taken as the camera is set up here.

I got this footage from the setup photographed above.

Below is a sample of some of the raw footage:

LO2 - Legal and Ethical

In the audio-visual product, I used some shots of Caledonian MacBrayne ferries. In a real scenario, I would have to gain permission from the company to use footage that contains copyrighted material such as their logo. I also used some footage that featured storefronts in Tobermory, and would also need to get permission from the owners in any real-life scenario.

In the film I used some royalty-free music I have on my laptop. This piece of music came from a disc called "Good Time Guitar". It is one of 20 non-copyrighted music tracks that are free for use.

LO2 - Inspiration

These are some of the short films I have seen that will inspire my own work. They aren't long, but they concentrate on giving a general "feel" to the place they are documenting.

LO1 - Storyboards

LO1 - Initial Shooting Script

Initially, the idea I had for the media product was a scripted short film that was to have a narration, which can be seen here in this initial shooting script. However, because of the unpredictable nature of the project I decided to take on, I had to adapt the plans for my media product.

LO1 - Treatment

MULL

Genre

Documentary

Duration

5 to 15 minutes

Target Audience

The target audience will be a wide age range of people who are 20 to 50 years old. It will be mainly people who are interested in travel, wildlife and the outdoors. Stereotypically, it will be males from the ABC1 socio-economic grade as it is people from this category who tend to be interested in wildlife and nature.

Synopsis

The film will describe how life is living on an island called Mull in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. It will feature the scenery on the island, and wildlife on the island as well as in the surrounding waters.

Contingencies

Contingencies are essential for a project like this, so if the main plan fails, I will make a documentary based on a closer location such as the Peak District, or somewhere I visit often such as the Lake District or Wales.
